16 March 2018

Doha Triathlon will take place on Friday 16th March 2018, in the surrounding area of the Museum of Islamic Art, with the scenic view of Doha’s skyline in the background.

This is the second edition of the event which started on 20 th January 2017. In addition of the full Olympic Triathlon and Sprint distances that we offered last year, we are happy to announce that we are now bringing in a Super Sprint distance for teenagers aged 12-13 and 14-15 years old, individually or in teams.

Super Sprint – 375m swim, 10km bike, 2.5k run

Sprint – 750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5k run

Olympic – 1500 m swim, 40 km bike, 10k run

The swim will take place in bay behind the
Museum. Doha average sea water temperature in March is 22.6 degrees Celsius (71.3 Fahrenheit) and therefore, as per ITU rules, the use of wetsuits for the swim will be most likely forbidden (water temperature reaching or exceeding 22 C (71.6 F) for adults and 20 C (68 F) for children).

Transition will be placed next to Richard Serra’s ‘7’ Sculpture. The cycling leg will be along the Corniche and back to the Museum Park for the run.

The Museum of Islamic Art, is one of the Doha’s most iconic building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei. It hosts a collection of finest Islamic art pieces from across the Islamic world from the 7 th to the 19 th century.

This consists of a vest or short sleeve top and running/cycling shorts for the run/bike sections. Tri-suits can be worn and are recommended. Wetsuits, as per ITU rules, will be most likely forbidden on the day of the event but we will update closer to the date whether they can or cannot be worn. Swimsuits must not be used for cycling or running and chests must covered during the bike and run legs. There are no change tents provided in transition. Nudity is strictly prohibited in the transition area. Failure to comply with the dress code will result in disqualification.

  • Set in the stunning MIA Park, Doha with wonderful views of Doha’s West Bay.
  • Closed road cycling course along the Corniche.
  • Timing system

Frequently Asked Questions / FAQ’s

  • Where is the event taking place?

The 2018 Doha Triathlon @ MIA is taking place in the Museum of Islamic Art Park, Doha Qatar.  MIA Park is located on the Doha Corniche approximately 20 minutes from Hamad International Airport and 20 minutes from West Bay, Doha.

  • How do I register for the event?

Once the registration if open there will be a button in the main page that will link you directly to the registration process.

For teams you need to enter the name of the team, and then, the details of all team members, starting for the team captain.

It is very important that email and phone numbers are correct as we will be communicating to the participants by email and SMS.

  • Can I register for the event on the day?

Strictly no entry on the day, you must register on the event registration site.

Race registration will close 2 days before the race.

  • What time does the event start?

Registration and transition will typically open at 05.00 am. There will be soon a time table with all the races and times including deadlines for transition.

  • How will the event start?

All competitors will be required to get into the water before the start. Kayaks will position you to the water start line. The race will be a mass water start, set off by a gun. Do not be late for the start of your race otherwise you will not be allowed to race.

  • What time does the event finish?

We anticipate the last athlete will cross the finish line at approximately 12:30 hrs.

Only you will be able to say what time your race will finish.  On average an Olympic distance triathlon takes between 2 and 3 ¾ hours.

  • Where should I collect my race pack?

All athletes are required to collect their race pack, containing race giveaways, race numbers and stickers. There will be an option to collect the race pack two days before the race. More information will come soon.

  • Is the race briefing mandatory and how long will it take?

The pre-race and safety briefing will take place at 6.40am, this will provide you with any last minute course or rule changes. The briefing will take no longer than 10 minutes. We will soon be sending you a pre-race briefing video for you to watch before race day. An athlete information pack will also been sent to you detailing all the race information.

  • How is the event timed? Can I use my own MYLAPS timing chip?

This year we will not be using MYLAPS. You do not have to bring your own chip.

We will be using our own timing system.  All competitors will be given their timing chip on race day at registration. They will have to return the chip after crossing the finish line.  Teams will be issued one chip, the chip is to be passed between team members in transition only.

  • Can I drop my bike off the day before?

We are studying this option and we will inform you through the race instructions.

  • What about if I reach transition after deadline on race day?

We really advise you to be for registration at 5:00 am or as early as you can and drop your bike off in transition before deadline.

If you arrive after this time you won’t be able to race. The deadline will be published in the race instructions.

  • What time does transition open and close on race day?

Transition will be open from 05.00am on race day to allow you to check your gear prior to the race.  Transition will close at 06.30 am (unless a different time is published in the race instructions) and at this time no athletes will be allowed in the transition area prior to their race.  If you have not racked your bike by this time you will not be allowed to race.

  • When can I get my bike out of transition after the race?

You will be able to remove your bike from transition only after the race has finished.  We anticipate that this will be around 12:00am. Only athletes with race numbers, matching their bike number will be able to remove bikes and kit from transition, this is to ensure the safety and security of your bike.

  • Is there somewhere I can store my bag?

There will be bag drop area next to registration.  Each competitor has a baggage tag INSIDE your race pack printed with the same race number – affix it around the handle of your bag before depositing it. If you choose to use this facility make sure your bag closes securely (nothing will fall out) and do not include valuables – organizers do not accept responsibility for any loss. To collect afterwards simply show your bib number.

  • Are wetsuits allowed?

Wetsuits are allowed as per ITU competition rules

The expect water temperature to be above 20 degrees and therefore wetsuits will not be allowed for the super sprint category. Regarding categories involving adults, a last decision will be made and announced near the day of the event. Only proper swimming attire will be allowed, trisuits and swimming costumes are preferable. No bikinis.

  • I’m nervous about the swim, do you have on water safety and will I be disqualified if I take a break.

The swim can be daunting for the novice triathlete, however there is no need to get concerned.  We will have a highly experienced safety crew on the water throughout your swim.  The safety crew are there to support you and it’s OK if you need to seek their support.  They won’t move you forward on the course but will allow you to rest before continuing.  If you seek their assistance to move you forward or back to the dock, you will be disqualified.
